![]() ![]() ![]() The task of a Dickens biographer is, therefore, something of a double-edged sword. ![]() As an author, he invested so much of himself in his novels that he cannot be separated from the fictional worlds and people that sprang from his imagination. Of course, Dickens worked from real life he was the ‘eye’, the ‘camera’, turning his lens upon nineteenth century England and peopling it with heroes, heroines and strange, mysterious, even monstrous figures, which might have been larger than life, but which never strayed into the unbelievable. The mythology of Dickens is due in no small part to his genius in presenting his readers with scenes and people so authentic and memorable that they embed themselves in the consciousness. Indeed, ‘Charles Dickens’ is as much a part of literary mythology and fable as his imaginary inventions. Dickens could so easily have been a character in his own works it is easy to imagine him sharing tales with Mr Pickwick, casting a protective eye over young Oliver Twist, or sitting in the court room in the interminable case of ‘Jarndyce vs Jarndyce’ in Bleak House. If the fictional characters created by Charles Dickens are so vividly drawn that they seem almost real, then it is also true that their originator often appears to stand on the shadowy borderline between reality and fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maia, however, is resourceful enough to find herself smack in the middle of more excitement than she ever imagined, from a mysterious “Indian” with an inheritance, to an itinerant actor dreading his impending adolescence, to a remarkable journey down the Amazon in search of the legendary giant sloth. Brief Summary of Book: Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson ![]() ![]() ![]() The paper traces the genesis of the essay, as well as its conceptual and textual origins, interprets the symbolism of the title, and points out the French influence: the essay was written in the summer 1949 in Paris, where the poet was living and working in 1945–1951. Deciphering the turning-points of Mexican history, facts of culture and literature, idioms and codes of behaviour, and revealing archetypal structures of the Mexican cultural imaginary, Paz seeks to abolish certain national myths, but, despite his own intention, gives them a new life: the literary quality of the text he created favours a crystallization of the second order myths, like the figures of macho and Malinche, the images of the Conquest and the Mexican Revolution, and, finally, the labyrinth of solitude itself. The paper is devoted to The Labyrinth of Solitude (1950, 1959) – the most famous Octavio Paz’s essay, which occupies a central place in his versatile work and gives a characteristic example of the hybrid genre most corresponding to the idiosyncrasy of Latin American cultural thinking. ![]() ![]() This email address is being protected from spambots. ![]() Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia) Gladoshchuk About the author:Īnastasia V. “Mexican Masks”: An Introduction to Octavio Paz’s “The Labyrinth of Solitude” Issue: ![]() ![]() ![]() So Mercy had better prepare to watch her back.
